Gameplay [edit]

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is an activity role-playing game in which players take on the role of protagonist Jack Garland, exploring environments and fighting monsters of the Final Fantasy serial. Combat takes place in real-time, with Jack being able to switch betwixt two assigned jobs and utilize concrete and magical attacks. Once an enemy'due south "break gauge" is depleted, Jack can perform a finishing accident that crystallizes the enemy, allowing Jack to harvest them and restore a portion of his magic meter.[2] [3]

Synopsis [edit]

Stranger of Paradise is set in a dark fantasy interpretation of the setting for the original Concluding Fantasy game. The main character is Jack Garland, a man consumed by a demand to destroy Anarchy. Jack is accompanied by other companions, including newcomers Ash and Jed. During the journey they face a knight who has taken on the role of Chaos; while seemingly the foretold Warriors of Light, each has doubts as to whether that is their role.[3] [4]

Evolution [edit]

Stranger of Paradise is being co-developed by franchise creator Square Enix and Koei Tecmo segmentation Squad Ninja. It is beingness co-directed past Daisuke Inoue from Foursquare Enix and Hiroya Usuda and Nobumichi Kumabe from Team Ninja; co-produced by Jin Fujiwara from Square Enix and Fumihiko Yasuda from Squad Ninja. The story and scenario are being written by Stellavista Ltd. freelancer scriptwriter Kazushige Nojima. Longtime Square Enix employee Tetsuya Nomura created the original concept, and acts as graphic symbol designer and creative producer in the game.[three] [five] The music is being composed by Naoshi Mizuta, with boosted contributions by Hidenori Iwasaki and Ryo Yamazaki.[6] Nomura created the initial idea for Origin later on production finished on Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, imagining an action-focused game nigh acquisition locations. When later approached for a new Final Fantasy concept, he combined this initial concept with a unlike concept of a game serial focusing on Terminal Fantasy'due south villain Garland, as an angry older protagonist to create the terminal concept.[iii] [vii] Due to the shift in tone, Nomura originally thought information technology would be an original title, only Inoue and Fujiwara pushed for its inclusion in the franchise.[half dozen]

The aim behind the title was a mature, "brutal" have on the Concluding Fantasy series that would separate it from the rest of the franchise while retaining connections to it. The gameplay was designed to emulate Team Ninja'south known manner of challenging activity combat; Team Ninja had previously worked with Square Enix on Dissidia Final Fantasy NT.[3] The job system, a recurring feature of Final Fantasy, took inspiration from the system created for Final Fantasy Five, with Inoue proverb there were more than jobs than that game featured in Stranger of Paradise.[8] The game combines the chore organisation with Soulslike gameplay elements.[9] The level designs deliberately emulated or referenced other numbered entries, such as a wooded wetland expanse taking inspiration from the Sunleth Waterscape from Final Fantasy 13.[10]

Rather than a remake of the first Final Fantasy, Stranger of Paradise was a new storyline using the original every bit inspiration, focusing on the themes of examining the role and goals of Warriors of Light. In dissimilarity to the pale crystals used across nigh of the series, the red crystals and blood-colored elements of artwork emphasised the darker tone.[6] Commenting on the scenario, Nojima highlighted ane line, "information technology's non a hope or a dream. It's like a hunger. A thirst", as the mainspring of the story.[iii] The subtitle had a dual meaning of the party literally being strangers in the game globe, and the party being unwelcome in the game's "paradise".[6] Character Princess Sara was designed past Roberto Ferrari, who emulated the original game'due south pattern for her. The key artwork was created by Foursquare Enix's Image Studio CGI division nether Nomura'southward supervision.[10]

Release [edit]

The game'southward existence was leaked by industry insiders in May 2021[11] and was shown during a Square Enix livestream forming part of E3 2021; its platforms are PlayStation four, PlayStation 5, Microsoft Windows via the Epic Games Shop, Xbox I and Xbox Serial X/S.[iv] [12] A limited time trial version was as well launched aslope the declaration, intended as a standalone demo to elicit feedback from players to finetune the game prior to release.[3] During this early on promotional stage, Square Enix decided to focus only on the opening section and early premise of the game, keeping other details secret.[6] The trailer met with a mixed response from journalists and fans due to its tone and characters designs.[xiii] [14] [15] The demo was counterbalanced then it was approachable using different playstyles, incorporating unlike job types and difficulty levels.[3] At release, the demo was found to not launch due to corrupted files, prompting Foursquare Enix to work on a fix.[xiii] [16] A patch was released on June 15, fixing the corrupted files and assuasive the demo to be played. The patch came included with start-time downloads.[17] Due to the initial troubles, the demo'due south availability was extended past ii days.[6]

Based on feedback from the first demo, the graphics and performance were improved, and commands were included for players to trigger party back up commands manually.[8] Nomura originally planned the game's marketing around the mystery of Jack'due south identity, just Fujiwara told Nomura that many Western fans correctly guessed that Jack was this game's version of Garland. In response, Nomura reworked the marketing to focus on how Jack became Garland, with the image of Garland carrying Sara becoming a fundamental image related to both the opening and the second one-half of the narrative.[10] On revealing Jack's identity before the game'due south release, Fujiwara told Polygon that "the team thought rather than having it suspended upwardly in the air – with players kind of speculating 'Wait, this is a lot more trigger-happy than we'd expected. This hero grapheme seems to be a lot older and more mature compared to your typical Final Fantasy protagonist' – rather than misleading people, the squad felt that it would be amend if we were more transparent most what the story was going to exist near. That's why nosotros decided that we wanted to reveal this as a story near the villain, just that in that location is a rich story backside it that we want to show".[18]

The game is set for release on March 18, 2022. A second demo was released betwixt Oct 1 and October 11, allowing players to try out the multiplayer content.[19] The demo also included an expanded version of the first demo'south unmarried-histrion content.[8] A third and concluding demo was released on March 10, 2022 and will be bachelor until Apr 19.
